1. Pick a Good Spot

Place pots at that place where they can receive at least six hours of sun. Make sure to place them near a water source as they require moisture supply or you can get a water hose. Try to group pots together but not so close that leaves rub against each other. Rubbing of leaves can lead to the spread of disease.

2. Find the Best Tomato for You

3. Choose the Right Pot

For determinate tomatoes, ideal pot size is the 18-inch diameter and 24-inch diameter for indeterminate tomatoes. If you are choosing a pot by its volume then go for a pot with 20 gallons. It’s fine to use 5 or 10 gallons container but for best results choose the bigger one.

4. Use Premium Quality Soil

5. Plant Tomatoes Properly

Be sure to dig a deep enough so that two third of stem goes into the pot for better stem growth. If a chilly night threatens, cover pots with frost blanket and swaddle them with blankets.

7. Cover the Soil

When planting tomatoes in pots, keep the soil level one inch below the rim of the pot so that you can add a layer of mulch to keep the soil moist.  Also, you can use traditional mulch material such as straw, shredded bark or newspaper.

8. Water Regularly

Proper watering is a big key to success for growing tomatoes in pots. Keep soil consistently moist. Use the finger test to see if a plant needs water. If the top inch of soil is dry when you push your finger into it, it’s time to give it a drink.

9. Feed Your Plants
